Engagement session at Bogstad Gård — Emilie & Andreas

An afternoon before the wedding

An engagement session at Bogstad Gård in Oslo with Emilie and Andreas — two people who clearly enjoy each other's company, and it showed in front of the camera.

Emilie and Andreas met me at Bogstad Gård on an afternoon in May. There was no grand plan — we walked, talked a little, looked for the light. That’s how I like engagement sessions to feel. Not an assignment to get through, but a couple of hours where you can ease into being in front of a camera without anything being at stake.

What they may not have known themselves, but what is obvious from the first frame, is that they are two people who genuinely enjoy each other’s company. Andreas teases, Emilie laughs. She puts him in his place, he laughs. That’s how it is in front of the camera. And that’s how it ends up in the photos.

For me, an engagement session is a kind of prologue. It’s rarely about the individual photographs themselves — it’s about the fact that the next time we meet, on the wedding day, we’ve already done this once. You know what I do. I know how you are together. We save ourselves the first twenty minutes of the wedding day where you’d otherwise just be getting to know each other.

After this afternoon Emilie and Andreas chose to book me as their wedding photographer too. That’s how it should feel — an engagement session as a foretaste, not a test.

Emilie and Andreas wrote later: “Helge is an incredibly talented, creative and flexible photographer and videographer. He listened to our wishes and offered suggestions based on his professional experience. We felt very safe with him, and his calm nature made us enjoy being in front of the camera on an otherwise hectic day.”
