Helge Meisal

Helge Meisal, Norway wedding photographer

I'm not interested in wedding photography that looks like an advertisement for wedding photography.

I'm Helge Meisal. I grew up on Jæren on the southwest coast of Norway, and I now live in Oslo. I photographed my first wedding in 2023, and the work has only grown since. 2025 was the first year I worked as a full-time wedding photographer, and the calendar for 2026 is filling up quickly. I work across Norway, from the beaches of Jæren to wherever you choose to get married.

What interests me is what actually happens on a wedding day. The mother of the bride biting her lip to keep from crying. The groom watching his future wife without her knowing. The child who's fallen asleep under the dinner table. Those photos don't exist if the photographer is too busy moving people around.

At the same time, I know that family portraits, group shots and structured moments belong at a wedding. They're in every gallery I deliver. The difference is how we balance them. I think the best approach is a combination: clear direction where it's needed, and full freedom where something real is happening.

How I work

I arrive early. Not because I have to, but because I like to walk around the venue before the guests arrive. See where the light falls. Say hello to the family. Get a feel for the rhythm.

By the time the day really begins, I've already landed. That's when I can be present without being in the way. I move quietly, stay on the edges when that makes sense, and place myself where things are happening. A typical wedding day is eight to ten hours with a camera, often more.

I eat when you eat. Most couples don't want photos of people chewing. I don't want to take them either. So when you sit down for dinner, I do the same — usually at a separate table nearby, camera ready in case someone gets up to give a speech.

It's one of many small judgements I make through the day. They aren't about photos. They're about letting the day flow naturally.

After the wedding, I go through every frame myself. That's typically 1500 to 3000 photos from the day, and I deliver 400 to 600 finished, edited images back to you. That's the volume I think gives both narrative and breadth, without becoming overwhelming.

Editing takes around eight weeks. If you also book video, the film usually arrives 12 to 16 weeks after the wedding. That's a little longer than some promise, but it's the time I need to deliver work I'm satisfied with.

When we're two

For weddings that need two pairs of eyes, I bring a second photographer. Most often that's my partner Lisa, whom I know well enough to anticipate how she works and where she'll position herself. She's my primary second shooter, but she isn't always available — and when she isn't, I have a network of colleagues I have arrangements with.

The photo and video package requires two people, because one person can't cover both formats well at the same time. Larger full-day weddings can also benefit from a second shooter, depending on size and logistics. We talk about this during the planning phase.

How we figure out if we're a good fit

I don't accept every enquiry. Not because I'm difficult, but because it works better for everyone if we're actually a good match — both in style and personality.

If you're after dramatic, tightly edited editorial photographs and a photographer who directs you through the day like a film director, there are other talented photographers who match that better.

If you want photos that feel like a day you actually lived, rather than a day that was photographed, then we're probably a good fit.

The simplest way to find out is to talk. I respond to enquiries within 24 hours, including questions you don't end up booking me for.

Coverage and travel

I'm based in Oslo and work across Norway. For weddings outside Oslo and surrounding area, travel costs are added to the package price. I always arrive the day before a wedding that requires travel, so I'm rested and ready when the day begins.

For weddings on Jæren and in the Stavanger region in particular, I often combine travel with planning meetings, so we avoid extra logistics during the planning process.

"Helge var en svært oppmerksom og detaljorientert fotograf, som var lydhør til våre ønsker. Vi ønsket oss levende bilder av gjester og situasjoner i bryllupet, og her leverte Helge 10/10! Fra planlegging til gjennomføring og etterarbeid, var vi veldig fornøyd. Anbefales!"
